Why are we doing this?

To revive this expedition on a step-by-step pace is a unique adventure.

Even if our trek will be a first attempt to cross Australia using this way, on foot and unsupported, our aim is neither to set a record nor to perform a sportive exploit. Instead, we intent to humbly experience Australia’s outback and meet with its population.

Following the steps of Burke and Wills is a project based on Lara and Sébastien eternal passion for trekking and before all, a long lasting passion for Australia; a large, wild and beautiful country.

Having already travelled extensively in different Australian states, we always felt a strong desire for further discovery and exploration of the “Terra Incognita”. The Australian Outback has a very special attraction on Sébastien who developed a real passion for deserts and isolated areas while living in the Arabian Gulf countries.

While hearing for the first time about our trip project, people’s first reactions are very diverse. A common question is about the reason why undergoing this on foot because it would easily be done sitting in a comfortable 4X4 car. We believe the way to feel and sample a region is to discover it at nature’s pace. When we arrive on foot in a new place, it doesn’t only change our own perspective, but it also generally modifies the welcoming we receive, because of the curiosity we represent, especially in a remote location.

We hope our project will also increase people’s awareness about today’s ecological challenges, including the lack of fresh water and the need to urgently develop a more sustainable natural resources management practice and economy.

Our goal is to share our passion for Australia and develop people’s desire to discover this astonishing country.

Most Australians are extremely encouraging because undergoing a trip like the Burke and Wills expedition represent for most of them the true freedom and adventurous spirit of the “Waltzing Matilda” country.

The other reason why Australians support our project is because they know the outback is a culturally rich place, that it is nature’s prime beauty and that we are sure to meet colourful characters.
